Saturday 22nd July - Bill Quay vs. Ryhope

In a tricky encounter the firsts were without Jeff Tudor and Mattie Dench plus Craig Falcus was called into work but welcomed back David Brown with Chris Dunn coming in as a late replacement. The firsts batted first and were in desperate trouble with Hunt, Gardiner, Little and Bentham all back in the pavilion and at 12 for four things looked bleak. However Shaun Smith stood firm in rescuing the home side and with Nathan Drewery showing promise added 50 for the next wicket before Nathan was out for 23. Michael Hunt also back in the firsts joined Shaun and added 90 runs before he was out for a very good 48. Shaun rided his luck and with some hefty blows took the total to 203 for nine before David Hunt called a halt. Kennedy two for 39 and Purewal three for 38 were the pick of the visitors attack. Ryhope started well with 35 for the first wicket before opener Purewal was out caught and when some little stands developed the home sides total was looking decidedly small. However David Hunt introduced himself into the attack and with some excellent ground fielding pegged the visors back and were eventually all out for 183 with only a few balls remaining. Hunt finished with a season's best of six for 37 and Smith three for 54. With results going our way the firsts climbed to 2nd only 13 points behind the leaders.

Neil Cuskeran at 15 was making his debut and quicly took more wickets ably backed up by Sean Smith and David Hunt and the innings closed on 148 rom nearly 50 overs. Wednesday 13th July Bill Quay vs. Ryton - Gateshead Metro Cup

What promised to be a keen game turned into a rout over the visitors on a hot night at the Quay. Batting first with only 24 on  the board Bill Gardner was out for 24 and when Sean Smith joined Jeff Tudor the score quickly moved onto 77 from only 8 overs before Sean was out for 34. This was the start of some remarkable hitting from Paul Bentham who hit 107 from only 35 balls with 9 sixes and 10 fours and with Jeff also in fine form he was unbeaten at the end with 72 also some with big hits with 3 sixes and 8 fours in a total of 248 for 3. and then we were third

IN THE second of the weekend games another 20 points were up for grabs against the bottom side Houghton who could only muster 9 men. At the start there only looked like one winner with the visitors getting off to a blazing start with 56 coming from the first 6 overs with Robinson hitting 8 4’s and 2 6’s in his knock of 46 but once out only Johnson 32 troubled the Quay’s attack with Michael Orridge well to the for which is nice to see Michael back to his best finishing with four for 26 backed up by David Hunt two for 26 and again the outfielding being exceptional. Chasing a total of 118 Jeff Tudor and Bill Gardner quickly got into their stride with 59 coming from the first 6 overs before Jeff was out for 46. Bill was joined by Craig Falcus who saw the Quay home without further loss with Craig on 18 not out and Bill with 41. The Quay are now upto 3rd spot in the table.

In the first “double” weekend of the season the firsts traveled to Easington looking for their fourth win running. Fine outfielding and wicket keeping by Bill Gardner restricted the home side to 176 all out with Sean Smith taking five for 68. In reply, despite Jeff Tudor falling LBW without scoring Mattie Dench remained defiant and despite half the side out for 67 defeat looked certain. However skipper David Hunt joined Dench and saw the firsts home by 5 wickets and 20 points Mattie was not out on 82 and David Hunt 46 with Gary Ward the pick of the visitors attack with five for 60.

saturday 13th may bill quay vs. boldon ca

The firsts entertained Boldon CA at home confident of extending their unbeaten run and remaining top of the Surridge Sports Durham Coast League. Losing the toss and being inserted they got off to the worst possible start with both openers Jeff Tudor and Matty Dench back in the pavillion without scoring both from the bowling of Lee Auty and 2 wickets were down without any runs being recorded. Worse followed when Gardner departed for 4 but a stand developed between Chris Little and Paul Bentham but when both departed for 28 and 19 respectively the score looked at least presentable. Craig Falcus continued the work but wickets were falling at the other end and it was only a swift 20 not out by David Earle and 28 from Falcus took the total to 133 all out with the wickets being shared by the visitors attack Auty, Lincoln and Critchley all taking two. Boldon's reply was never in doubt with 53 on the board before David Jones departed for 30. Despite ringing the changes Critchley 64 not out and ex Bill Quay player Michael Towns 16 not out passed the home total for the loss of only one wicket. Back to the drawing board but the Quay will welcome back Sean Smith who has been away on holiday.

2nd xi vs. houghton

The seconds entertained Houghton seconds at Bill Quay and asked the visitors to bat first and despite an early success when Michael Orridge had Munro LBW a determined stand developed between McCoy and rewcastle who put 60 on for the next wicket before both were out for 54 and 13 respectively to the bowling of Paul Cox and Kev South. Wickets continued to fall but skipper Anderson stood firm and when all wickets fell he was still there undefeated on 44. Bowling honours were shared with 2 each for Wraith, Orridge, South and Cox in the visitors total of 148. The Quays reply started off badly with the loss of two quick wickets but Nathan Drewery 35 and Graham Hudson 24 steadied the ship but when both were out more wickets fell and it was only a determined 9th wicket stand between South 18 and Sam Wraith 24 put a respectable total on the board but to no avail and the seconds were short by 30 runs. A disappointing batting performance.

sunday 30th april bill quay 3rd xi vs boldon (hetton lyons league)

The thirds on Sunday travelled to face a very strong Boldon side and again had a mixed side of youth experience and very experienced players. Batting first the thirds struggled throughout losing wickets and in a total of 98 only Brian Hill 30 and John Chamberlain making a welcome return with 19 but with Spinks 5 for 34 the Quay could only make 98. However the home side also made heavy work of passing the total and had it not been for Jackson 53 the thirds would have won with but with a small total remaining 6 wickets went down before victory was attained but sound debuts were made by Neil and Mark Cuskeran who at 15 looked fine prospects.

Scores: Bill Quay 98 Boldon 102-6
Boldon won by 4 wkts

Sat 29th April: Bill Quay vs. Easington

The firsts opened up the 2006 season of the Surridge Sports Durham Coast League with a home game against Easington on a fine day at Bill Quay and fielded what is probably their strongest side. Winning the toss and putting the visitors into bat the Quay were rewarded by early wickets and at 12/3 the visitors struggled against David Earle and Sean Smith who took 2 and 1 respectively. However a determined stand of 66 for the fourth wicket rescued Easington before Jones was bowled by Smith for 22. Skipper Atherton was still there and with willing partners in Wilson 50, Price 19 and 15 from veteran Brian Fenwick posed problems for the Quay attack. However skipper David Hunt rang the changes with some success as David Brown 3/50, Paul Bentham 2/39 and 1/11 from Alan Rackstraw terminated the visitors innings, with only 10 men, at 199. David Earle 2/39 and 1/43 from a very rusty Sean Smith were the main wicket takers.
The Quay got off to an excellent reply from Jeff Tudor and Mattie Dench and had 94 on the boardbefore Jeff got his usual LBW decision on 46 but a further 30 was added for the next wicket before Atherton removed both Dench 41 and Paul Bentham 18 and then the Quay lost quick wickets to be at 156/6 before David Hunt 18, Alan Rackstraw 18 pushed the Quay towards their goal. However at 186/7 another crisis before Chris Little righted the ship but with overs rapidly running out they eventually squeezed home by 2 wickets with 9 balls remaining. Atherton who bowled 12 overs finished with 5/58. Evidence from the Quays batting by those that had had nets against those that needed them which I am sure will be rectified this week.

Scores: Easington 199 for 9 (Atherton 52, Wilson 50 Brown 3-50)
Bill Quay 200 for 8 (J Tudor 46, M Dench 41 Atherton 5-58).
Bill Quay won by 2 wkts - Bill Quay 20pts Easington 6pts

2nd xi vs Easington

The seconds traveled down the A19 to Easington with a very strong team made up from several of last years players and some promising juniors. Again the Quay won t he toss and put Easington into bat and made early advances to have the home side 28/3 with all wickets falling to Steve Gould. However a stand of 71 between Harriman 68 and Craggs 11 took the score to 99 before the former was bowled by Michael Orridge for 68. Paul Cox was then introduced into the attack and quickly wrapped up the home batters with the last 5 wickets going down for only 2 runs. Paul finished with the amazing return of 6/15 from 7 overs in the home sides 120 all out.
In reply 16 for the first wicket before Gary Haines was caught for 9 but Steve Gould11 and Michael Orridge 30 took the score past the half way before both were out for 11 and 30 respectively. Nathan Drewery then continued the work and despite losing 2 further wickets Nathan was joined by skipper Chris Forshaw 30 who passed the home sides total without further mishap with Nathan unbeaten on 34 and a good start to the season.

Scores: Easington 120 (Harriman 68, P Cox 6-15)
Bill Quay 122-5 (N Drewery 34*, G Forshaw 30*, M Orridge 30)
