Sat 3rd Sept: Bill Quay vs Ryhope. With nothing at stake for both sides this game had all the hall marks of an end of season”jolly”and this it proved to be. The home side were put in and immediately lost early wickets with 3 to David Brown giving him 63 for the season and at one stage were 104/8 with David getting wickets 64 and 65 with one from the occasional “Shane” Tudor, David Earle and Alan Rackstraw. However Graham Smith and Kieron Summerside came together and whacked the occasional bowlers to all parts of Ryhope and the next wicket did not fall until 191 when, in desperation skipper David Hunt came on and in his 3rd over removed Smith, superbly stumped by Bill Gardner for 73. Alan Rackstraw came back and immediately got rid of Summerside for 43 and the innings ended on 209 all out. David Brown finished with 5/40 and Bill Gardner an excellent performance behind the stumps with 4 stumpings. Bill Quays batting order appeared to be drawn out of a hat but after a long season we will not complain but again early wickets fell with half the side out for 35 mainly bowles by ex colleague Craig Smith and only 26 from David Brown and 19 each from David Hunt and Graham Hudson took the total to 117 with Craig Smith finishing in style with 8/50. Still to finish in 6th spot after the pre season goings is acceptable and we look to even better things next season. Scores Ryhope 209 all out (20points) defeated Bill Quay 117 all out(5 points) by 92 runs. Sat 27th Aug: Bill Quay vs. Easington In the penultimate game of the season the firsts traveled to Easington to consolidate 6th spot in the League which is the tightest it has been for many years. The firsts loss the toss and were asked to bat first and got off to a flying start with the new opening partnership of Jeff Tudor and Chris Little and they put 80 on the board before Chris Little was out caught for 36. Jeff soon followed LBW for 46 but David Hunt and Sean Smith then doubled the score before both were out for 34 and 42 respectively. Mattie Dench for once failed to score, Craig Falcus then came and went for 16 befire David Brown and Alan Rackstraw took their toll on a tired home attack adding 56 for the 7th wicket before the declaration came on 243/7 with David 26 and Alan 32 and only Daniels 3/56 troubled the Quay batsmen. In contrast after a steady start David Brown and Sean Smith then had the openers back in the pavilion for 46 and when Kennedy and Ward were out both to David Brown for 23 and 20 respectively a collapse was on the cards and with David Brown rampant the innings quickly subsided to 116 all out with David Brown finishing with 8-50 to round off an exceptional month. Sean took the other two wickets at a cost of 33 runs. Scores Bill Quay (20 points) 243 for 7 defeated Easington 116 (3 points.) by 127 runs Sat.20th Aug: Bill Quay vs. Murton Whilst Murton have all but given up hope in retaining their championship for this season this game was important to the Quay who were hoping to to test their new found resolve. Murton were put in and brisk partnerships on an excellent batting strip and fast outfield saw good contributions from Lascombe 70 and 51 from Calvin Stephenson plus useful additions from all other batsmen in a total of 244/7 when they declared after 43 overs. Sean Smith 3/73, David Brown 3/92 and Alan Rackstraw 1/42 all stuck to their task. A very similar reply from the home side where all of their batsmen got in but no match winning scores materialized but Matty Dench again took the eye with 54, 20 from Sean Smith, 24 from Craig Falcus, 30 from David Brown, 22 from Chris Little and 20 from Alan Rackstraw saw the Quay in a good draw when time ran out leaving them 204/6. Calvin Stephenson 4/55 was the pick of Murtons attack. He will be greatly missed if he decides to move on but has served Murton well. Scores Murton 244/7(11 points) drew with Bill Quay 204/6(12 points) Sat 13th Aug Bill Quay vs. Silksworth Attempting another “double” the firsts entertained one of the early favourites for the League and the visitors batting first lost two early wickets in making 15 runs both wickets to David Brown. However Smailes and Crake took the score to 72 before Smailes was out for 43 and more wickets fell and with the score at 101/8 a low score looked on the cards but 39 from Bevan and a late onslaught from who was not out on 53 took the score to 185/9 before the overs ran out. The game was delayed in the middle of the innings when rain intervened and only 33 overs were possible. Sean Smith finished with 5/56 from 15 overs and 3/60 from David Brown. Bill Quays reply was poor after the previous games and Chris Pringle ripped through the early batsmen but Sean Smith with 36 not out made sure a draw was achieved and in the 25 overs they were 73/5 with Pringle taking 4/26. Scores Silksworth 185/9(10 points) drew with Bill Quay 73/5(9 points) Sat 6th Aug Bill Quay vs. Peterlee After last weeks wash out the firsts were determined to complete the double over strugglers Peterlee who had strengthened their team with two signings from Horden. The home side batted first and got off to a steady start with 19 from McCoy and 10 from Unitt but once they were out a slump developed and at 54/5 a low score looked on. Sean Smith having his best game with the ball was responsible for four of these wickets. Maddison and Buckingham put on a brave stand before they both perished to David Browns bowling for 16 and 13 respectively and the innings ended on 109 with Sean Smith 5/51 from 15 overs and David Brown enjoying a fine season 3/21. Keen to blood some youngsters Tom Laws was given a chance and took two very good catches. The Quay replied with 32 for the first wicket before Jeff Tudor was out LBW for 22 and when Gary Haynes quickly followed without scoring a shock looked on the cards. However Sean Smith took the score to 61 with slim Bill Gardner before he was out for 21. Bill had dropped anchor at one end but Craig Falcus hit a breezy 22 and with Bill staying on at the end to be undefeated on 20 the home total was easily passed in only 23 overs. Scores Bill Quay 110/4 (20 points) defeated Peterlee 109/10(2 points) by 6 wickets. Sat 23rd July Bill Quay vs. Seaham Park Always a tough game against Seaham who were second in the League. The Quay batted first and got off to a good start with Jeff Tudor continuing his fine form and with Mattie Dench had 50 on t he board before Dench was out for 19. Bill Gardner joined Jeff and took the score to 90 before Jeff fell for 54. Wickets then tumbled before Chris Little hit an unbeaten 24 and eventually they were all out for 180 with Howe taking 4/54 and McNicholas 3/45. The Park lost two early wickets only for skipper Hanson and Jim Taylor adding 80 for the third wicket before the latter was caught by Andrew Kirby from the bowling of Michael Orridge for 52. Hanson saw the home side home with an unbeaten 77 to win by 7 wickets with David Brown 2/55. A disappointing result from the recent good performances. Scores Seaham Park 183/3 (20 points) defeated Bill Quay 180/10 (4 points) by 7 wickets. Sat 16th July: Bill Quay vs. Dawdon Another excellent game this time against third placed Dawdon who lost the toss and were put in by David Hunt returning after holidays but the Quay were still lacking Mattie Dench also still on holiday. The home side had 55 on the board before Craig Price fell for 9 leg before to David Brown but Watson was joined by Stephenson and took the score to 105 before Watson was bowled by David Brown for 61. The home side steadily compiled a good total and when the innings was declared after 44 overs they had made 229/7 with excellentbatting from Alan Price 37, Stephenson 27 and Consitt remained unbeaten on 54. Wicket takers for the Quay were David Brown 4/68 from 18 overs and Paul Bentham 2/28. The Quay also had a good start with 40 on the board before Bill Gardner was bowled by Appleby for 18 and when skipper Hunt followed to the same bowler without scoring the good start appeared to be wasted. However a stand between Sean Smith and Jeff Tudor, who is at present going through a purple patch, took the score to 91 before Sean was leg before to Coates for 31. Craig Falcus joined Jeff and took the visitors near to the home sides total before Jeff was stumpted for 114-his third ton in 4 games. With the overs running out both Falcus and Bentham were run out going for the win and this was in the last over when 13 was required. 9 runs were obtained but when the last ball was bowled the Quay were 4 runs short but honours were shared in an excellent game. Scores Dawdon 229/7 (11 points) drew with Bill Quay 225/6 (12 points) Sat 9th July: Bill Quay vs. Castle Eden With only 5 first team regulars available due to holidays the Quay drafted in 3 under 15’s to field first against a full strength visiting side riding in third place. Castle Eden were put in and had 102 on the board for the first wicket before Bill Gardner had Higgins stumpted for 55. Alan Unsworth joined John Spellman Snr and they rattled along before Spellman was run out for 83 Wickets then fell but when the declaration came the visitors were 237/6 with David Brown 3/70 and Paul Bentham 2/33. Bill Quay got off to a dreadful start and were 8/3 with Jeff Tudor being caught by Langridge who claimed the catch when he had plainly scooped the ball from in front of him. Not to be outdone by this blatant form of cheating Paul Bentham then went about the attack with a display of hitting very rarely seen at Bill Quay and he made 144 to take the home side to within 50 runs of the visitors who lost 9 balls in the process after Paul had hit 11 6’s and 12 4’s but despite this and some last minute resistance from David Brown 15 and Graham Hudson 14 they were all out for 198. The cheated dismissal of Jeff Tudor obviously cost the Quay the game but this should not detract from Paul Benthams fine innings. Scores Castle Eden 237/6 (20 points) defeated Bill Quay 198 (5 points) by 39 runs. Sunday 3rd July: Bill Quay vs. Boldon CA In the second match of the weekend the firsts again were looking for a double and again were put into bat. With several players not available Bill Gardner partnered Jeff Tudor in opening the batting and had 70 on the board before Gardner was caught for 38. Sean Smith and Paul Bentham quickly followed but Craig Falcus helped Jeff to regain the upper hand and again Jeff pushed the score along to quickly reach his 50. Craig was dismissed for 23 and Lee Tudor joined his brother and saw Jeff reach his second century of the weekend and with Lee on 19 not out the declaration was applied with Jeff undefeated on 105. Critchley was the pick of the home bowlers who in a long spell took 4/92. Despite early encouragement with 2 quick wickets, steady stands developed and despite ringing the changes the overs ticked by and at the close 8 wickets had been taken so a good draw. David Brown no doubt paying for yesterdays celebrations finished with 3/60, Sean Smith 2/63 and Steve Gould fine figures against his old club of 4/24. Thus the challenge continues and without any fuss the firsts maintain 4th place. Scores Bill Quay 206/4 (12 points) drew with Boldon CA 162/8 (8 points) Saturday 2nd July: Bill Quay vs. Houghton The start of the second half of the season saw the firsts wanting to complete a double over strugglers Houghton. Losing the toss and being put into bat the Quay had 60 on the board before Mattie Dench was out for 32. Sean Smith joined Jeff Tudor, and the pair pushed the score along with relative ease with Jeff reaching 50 and in a stand worth 90 was broken when Sean was caught for 42 but Jeff took over the mantle and despite the loss of Bill Gardners wicket, reached his century and at the declaration was undefeated on 117.. The visitors also got off to a good start with a 50 stand before both openers were out Snowball for 22 and Grant for 20 both from the bowling of David Brown. Indeed this bowler was going to record his best ever figures for the Club and he claimed the first 9 wickets to fall but sadly for him the 10th wicket went to Alan Rackstraw when Chris Dunn took a magnificent catch to dismiss Wilson. The visitors surrendered to be all out for 121.Scores Bill Quay 217/3 (20 points) defeated Houghton 121/10 (1 point) by 96 runs. Saturday 25th June: Bill Quay vs. Ryhope This game was eagerly awaited with the return of old boy Craig Smith as the Ryhope pro. Skipper David Hunt won the toss and inserted the opposition and immediately had success when he caught Arundel from the bowling of Alan Rackstraw and further success followed when the dangerous John Minnis was caught by David Brown again from the bowling of Rackstraw but from 22/2 the score moved swiftly along. With 81 on the board Brett was bowled for 37 by the home skipper but Howe remained resolute and took the score to 132 before he was out leg before again to David Hunt. Paul Bentham joined the attack and with a mixture of bowling memorized the tailenders and the innings closed on 181 with Bentham returning 3/8, Rackstraw 2/30 and David Hunt 3/57 and the innings took just 43 overs. However the Quays reply was emphatic in that they never lost a wicket and with Jeff Tudor and Mattie Dench keeping up with each others score and when both had passed 50 Jeff just took the edge to finish with 87 not out with Dench 76not out to run out winners by 10 wickets in only 30 overs. Scores Bill Quay 183/0(20 points) defeated Ryhope 181/10 (3 points) by 10 wickets. Sat 18th June: Bill Quay vs. Easington An attractive home game with 4th placed Easington and lost the toss and were asked to bat first on an excellent batting track. Jeff Tudor opened and has run into some welcome form along with Matty Dench as they pushed the score along with ease against the visitors attack of Kennedy and Ward. They soon had 50 on the board which they accelerated to have a 100 partnership in 25 overs . The stand was eventually broken when Tudor was caught by Wilson for 76 and Matty Dench was joined Sean Smith and these 2 proceeded to add a further 80 runs before Smith was out for 54. Matty Dench then made his century and when the declaration was applied after 44 overs he was on 119 with Paul Bentham not out 6 in a total of 278 for two, a fine achievement. Easington also had a good start with 80 on the board before they lost Dave Kennedy caught by David Brown from the bowling of Steve Gould for 43 and the same partnership also accounted for the other opener Tarn for 44. Despite small stands wickets fell but the Quay couldn't finish off a determined Easington with Moses and Harbottle both not out at the end with 19 and 11 respectively in a total of 211/8. Skipper David Hunt tried 7 bowlers with Steve Gould the best at 3/36. Scores: Bill Quay 278/2(12 points) drew with Easington 211/8(9 points) Wednesday 15th June: Bill Quay vs. Silksworth (Andrew Dixon Cup) Alas it was not to be and the firsts were well beat in this semi final tie with the home side knocking up 157/5 with 56 from Pringle and 32 from Smailes, David Brown taking 3/68. The firsts went for the score from the outset but lost quick wickets and lost their way and were all out for 71. Beaten but not disgraced. Sat 11th June: Bill Quay vs. Murton Having got over one bogy team in the defeat of Silksworth the firsts travelled to league leaders Murton and were well and truly “turned over”. Put into bat the Quay never recovered from a poor start and at one stage were 38/6 and only 22 from Paul Bentham saw a score of 84 on the board. Calvin Stephenson again did the damage with 6/38. Muton despite the early loss of Richie Lowes for 10 quickly passed the total without any further loss and won by 9 wickets. Scores Murton 86/1 (20 points) defeated Bill Quay (0 points) by 9 wickets. Sun 5th June: Bill Quay vs. Silksworth The first double weekend of the season saw the firsts travel to bogy side Silksworth who lost the toss and were inserted and put on 49 for the first wicket with Davison 27 and Nield 31. They then lost quick wickets to the bowling of Alan Rackstraw and Sab Dhillon who each finished with 5/39 and 4/40 respectively. Chris little behibd the stumps in place of Bill Gardner took 3 catches and a stumping and the hosts were all out for 133. In reply despite losing Jeff Tudor for 12 Mattie Dench 59 and Sean Smith 42 saw the Quay home by 7 wickets to maintain their position in the league and a rare victory on Silksworths territory. Scores Bill Quay 137/3 (20 points) defeated Silksworth 133/10 ( 2 points) by 7 wickets. Sat 4th June: Bill Quay vs. Peterlee The firsts loss the toss and were put in and despite losing Gardner for 0 quickly got into their stride with Jeff Tudor 47 and David Hunt 22 putting on 60 for the next wicket. Sean Smith joined Jeff and despite Jeff falling early into the partnership Sean Smith took the visitors attack apart hitting a fine 101no and with Craig Falcus 24no took the score to 257/5 before the declaration was applied after 42 overs . Bill Quays track is now in excellent shape and is proving a batsmans paradise and so it proved with the visitors off to a good start with Maddison 30, Lauderdale 38 but the Quay could not part the last two batsmen and after 42 overs when time ran out Peterlee were 170/9 with David Brown 4/54 and Sean Smith capping a good alround game with 3/39. Scores Bill Quay 257/5 (11 points) drew with Peterlee 170/9 (5 points) Wednesday 3rd June Bill Quay vs.Ryhope (Andrew Dixon Cup) The firsts were attempting to reach the semi final with a trip to Ryhope and they batted first and with 42 from Jeff Tudor and 63 from Paul Bentham they posted a good score in the 20 overs with 21 from Chris Little in a total of 148/4. Ryhope replied in good spirits with21 from Minnis and 43 from Howells but again the firsts had the evil eye over their opponents and were well short at 128/7 Sat 28th May: Bill Quay vs. Washington The quay lost the toss and batted first and were in early trouble with the loss og Gardner and David Hunt both for 6 runs. However Jeff Tudor and Sean Smith steadied things with a stand of 60 before Jeff was out for 37. Mattie Dench joined Smith and they pushed the score along before Sean Smith was bowled by Lee for 30. Mattie went on to remain unbeaten on 52 before the declaration was applied. Washington also lost an early wicket when Cuthbertson was LBW to Smith but Lee 44 and Thompson 43 added 80 for the next wicketand when both were out to David Browns bowling the Quay were in with a chance but Nelson remained defiant and when the Quays total was passed he was still at the crease in making 53. Scores Bill Quay 171/8 Washington 175/5 Wed 25th May: Bill Quay vs. South Northumberland (Tyneside Charity Bowl) There was to be no upset this time when the firsts batted first and made a credible total of 81/6 against the present Premier League leaders with 13 from Jeff Tudor,20 from Chris Little and 19no from Alan Rackstraw. In reply Adam Heather saw the home side through with an unbeaten 36 and the score was passed with 3 overs to spare. Scores Bill Quay 81/6 lost to South North 82/2 Sat.21st May: Bill Quay vs. Seaham Park The visitors batted first and got off to a good start with 91 for the first wicket between Jobes and Hanson before the latter was out for 29 before Docherty joined Hanson and took the score to 164 before Hanson was run out for 77. Docherty went on to hit 63 in a total of 237/6 with Michael Orridge being the pick of the home attack short of Sean Smith. Michael finished with 4/74. The Firsts never got started and were up against some debatable LBW decisions but nevertheless should not have been in the position of 46/5 against a depleted attack well led by Ally Dick and only 51 from Paul Bentham rescued them from a poor score backed by 19 from Michael Orridge but they finished well short at 115ao with Dick 6/61. Scores Seaham Park 237/6 Bill Quay 115 by 122 runs Friday 20th May: Bill Quay vs. Boldon CA (Andrew Dixon Cup Replay) A much lower score than the first game and when the Quay batted first despite the early loss of Jeff Tudor Mattie Dench again starred with the bat scoring 46no with David Hunt 23 no in their total of 94/2. Boldons reply never materialized against the welcome return of Sab Dhillon who regrettably cannot play at the weekend and he finished with 6/43 backed up by 4/32 from David Brown. The Quay meet Ryhope and Craig Smith in the next round. Scores Bill Quay 94/2 beat Boldon CA 80ao by 14 runs. Wed 18th May: Bill Quay vs. Boldon CA (Andrew Dixon Cup) In the first cup tie of the season a thrilling game took place at the Quay. Batting first the Quay got off to a good start with 60 on the board before Jeff Tudor was out for 36. Paul Bemtham joined Mattie Dench and the score rattled along and closed without another wicket falling and at the end of the 20 overs 154/1 had been posted. Boldons reply was also helped by a good opening stand but the Quays depleted attack was giving away runs and with 36 from Jones, Critchley and Bellerby could not be parted and 4 was required to tie from the last ball. Despite all the Quays fielders being scattered about the boundary the final ball eluded them all and a replay was necessary. Critchley 61 and 28 from Bellerby got the main runs for Boldon. Scores Bill Quay 154/1 tied with Boldon CA 154/4 Sat 14th May: Bill Quay vs. Dawdon A stronger challenge this time for the firsts against one of the fancied sides for league honours. Put into bat the firsts had a disastrous start losing Jeff Tudor LBW for 4(another notch for Gordon Vincent) and Bill Gardner without scoring. Skipper David Hunt and Sean Smith came together and added 112 for the third wicket before Hunt was out for 29. Mattie Dench and Smith featured in adding another 50 runs before Sean was out for a fine 78 which contained 5 6’s. Chris Little joined Mattie Dench and when the declaration was applied after 45.3 overs they had made 46 and 25 respectively in a total of 221/5. Dawdon got off to a good start with 44 put on for the first wicket before McNicholas was LBW to Sean Smith for 14. Appleby and Price then doubled the score before Paul Bentham took a good catch from Michael Orridges bowling to dismiss Price for 21. Consitt joined Appleby and took the score to 106 before wickets started to fall but the Quay could not force home their advantage and when time was called the visitors were well short at 182/6 with Smith 2/52 , David Brown 3/66 from 20 overs and Michael Orridge 1/32. Nevertheless a credible draw which sees the Quay in the top three. Scores Bill Quay 221/5 (11 points) drew with Dawdon 182/6 (10 points) Saturday 30th April : Bill Quay vs. Boldon CA Whilst this game was never a grudge match as some commentators had suggested
with the loss of David and Michael Towns who had returned to the visitors, it did
add a touch of spice with some light hearted bantering going on. However the
visitors were no match for the Quays attack once the initial breakthrough was
made with “slim” Bill Gardner stumping opener Jones for 10 from David Browns
bowling and both David and Shaun Smith reduced the visitors to 29/6 and only
George Lincoln with 20 held the Quays attack at bay. The Towns brothers came Saturday 23rd April : Bill Quay vs. Houghton The first game of a new season is always eagerly looked forward to but with the
many comings and goings at the Quay this was a stiffer task than normal against
the side who finished second from bottom in the league last year. With a new
captain in David Hunt, a new professional in Shaun Smith and newcomer Mattie
Dench the firsts showed 5 changes from their regular side of last year. Winning the
toss and putting in the home side paid dividends with two early wickets both to
Shaun Smith who made an excellent opening debut. However opener Elliott held
the innings together and put on 30 for the next wicket with Ian Hauxwell before
the latter was bowled again by Smith. Elliott was eventually out caught by David
Brown from the bowling of Michael Orridge for 57. However Graham Robinson
proved a stubborn bat and held up the Quays attack and was unbeaten at the end The Quays reply got off to a bad start when Jeff Tudor was LBW second ball but Bill Gardner and David Hunt added 56 for the second wicket before the former was bowled for a patient 13. Shaun Smith quickly followed for 4 before Mattie Dench joined his skipper and added 26 for the next wicket before David Hunt was out for a fine 77. With wickets falling at regular intervals the home score was just within sight and with a valuable 14 from Michael Orridge the home total was passed with 2 wickets to spare. Scores: Houghton 161/7 (Smith 4-54) Bill Quay 162/8 (Hunt 77)
